Ferrous Metal Protection

Ferrous metals are metals which contain iron. Steel, chrome and cast iron would be examples of ferrous metals. The chemical nature of ferrous metals makes these metals more susceptible to corrosion than most other metals.

The porous nature of these metals also makes them corrode and rust more quickly than most other metals. Typical multi-metal, multi-purpose VCI papers and films can not completely control corrosion on most ferrous metals. The addition of non-ferrous inhibitors into a VCI paper reduces the amount of ferrous inhibitors available for protection of iron and steel, resulting in a sacrifice in performance on ferrous metals.

Royco Packaging carries a complete line of VCI papers and polyethylene films designed specifically for the protection of all ferrous metals from rust and corrosion.

Whether you have small ferrous parts like gears, sprockets, springs, fasteners; or large coils or castings, Royco Packaging has the correct ferrous VCI product to protect your ferrous metal products.

As always, Royco Packaging provides free, state-of-the-art accelerated corrosion testing to determine the exact VCI corrosion-inhibiting system for your specific application.

Multi Metal Papers

Royco Packaging carries a complete line of VCI papers and polyethylene films, including new multi-metal formulations. A multi-metal VCI product has the capability of protecting many different types of metals from corrosion and rust.

Multi-Metal VCI products are an excellent choice when you have a product that combines ferrous and non-ferrous metals. An example of this would be powdered metal parts that contain iron powder and copper. Other examples would be engine blocks, or other large pieces of equipment that combine different metals assembled together. In addition, a multi-metal VCI product would be the best choice for electrical boxes and equipment.

Multi-metal VCI products protect such metals as iron, steel, tin, zinc, zinc galvanized, lead, cadmium and copper, among others.

Multi-metal VCI products are available in paper and polyethylene sheeting and bags. Multi-metal VCI eliminates the need to inventory several different VCI products. They also eliminate confusion on the plant floor as to which VCI product to use.

As always, Royco Packaging provides free, state-of-the-art accelerated corrosion testing to determine the exact VCI corrosion-inhibiting system for your specific application.

Non Ferrous Metals

Royco Packaging carries three specialty VCI papers for the protection of three specific non-ferrous metals. It is important to match up the correct VCI product to the metal you are protecting in order to provide the most complete protection available.

Royco Packaging stocks Alumitex for the protection of aluminum and aluminum parts. In the contact phase, Alumitex will prevent spotting, white rust and corrosion on aluminum.

Coppertex protects copper, brass, bronze, and other copper alloys from corrosion and tarnish.

Silver Savera protects silver, gold and other noble metals from corrosion and tarnish. Silver Savera absorbs hydrogen sulfide from the packaging environment.

As always, Royco Packaging provides free, state-of-the-art accelerated corrosion testing to determine the exact VCI corrosion-inhibiting system for your specific application.

How VCI Works

The term “VCI” stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor.
The chemicals in Daubert Cromwell products are volatile. When metals are wrapped or packaged in VCI, the chemicals volatilize in the packaging environment, forming a protective molecular layer on the surface of the metal. This protective layer serves as a barrier, preventing moisture, salt, dirt, oxygen, and other corrosion causing materials from depositing directly on the metal and causing rust and corrosion.

How VCI Works

Corrosion inhibitor compounds vaporize from the paper or film. They are attracted to the charged surface of the metal by virtue of their polar orientation.

The VCI molecules align on the surface of the metal to a depth of 3 to 5 molecules. This layer of molecules passivates the charged surface and creates a barrier that prevents oxidation. The corrosion cell (the flow of electrons in the metal and the flow of ions in the electrolytic surface layer) is unable to establish itself. Corrosion is halted.

Airtight packing is not required!

Simply store or ship metal parts in VCI packaging. When the parts are unwrapped, the protective layer immediately begins to dissipate. The metal parts are clean, corrosion-free and ready to use. No washing, dipping or cleaning is necessary.

The VCI molecules migrate into recesses and hard to reach areas on even the most complex shapes. The molecules build up on the metal surface until a continuous barrier has formed on the metal part.
